Improving
the Nutrition for the Elderly
The background
to this course is recent reports by the
British Association for Parenteral and
enteral Nutrition (BAPEN) report that one in
ten older people are affected by
malnutrition.
CSCI have also
recently produced reports about the
nutritional needs of the elderly in care
homes. Consensus of opinion is that more
emphasis must be placed upon meal times for
this seemingly vulnerable group.
The National
Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)
have expressed the view that “Lack of
knowledge about nutrition by healthcare
professionals” is a contributing factor.
The aims of this
course are:
• To describe
some of the reasons for malnutrition in the
elderly person
• Understand the body mass index and
its importance in helping to determine
malnutrition
• Identify those who are at risk from
malnutrition
• Identify measures that can be put
into place to improve / enhance mealtimes
for the service user.
